Let’s not kid ourselves Cincinnati Sports fans, 2019
sucked butt. FC Cincinnati’s first year didn’t go as we had hoped. The Reds
were out of it before May and the Bengals… well… they are still, in fact, the Bengals.
I’m not going to waste time looking back at the year that was, because I don’t
have the time, energy, or mental health to do so. With the FC Cincinnati season
set to swing in to full gear in two weeks, I want to look ahead with optimism
at what this year can bring to our glorious city.
The one thing that happened in 2019 that is the biggest
sports story in this city that is being undervalued, is Meg Whitman joining FCC
ownership. This is outstanding news. Meg and her husband were able to be the primary
investors for Sacramento’s bid before they decided to move on from Kevin Nagle
and his rail yard. One hundred million dollars may not sound like a lot to the
highbrow rich audience that reads my musings, but in the American Soccer
Industrial Complex it is huge. The practice facility is built. The stadium is
rising on the West End. Our bills are paid. These 100 million can go directly
to the roster. There are already rumors swirling that FCC plans to fill all
three Designated Player (DP) slots this season, and I wouldn’t be surprised in
the least to hear an announcement soon on one or possibly two of those players
(To the non-MLS expert, I want to explain the DP in the
simplest way possible. MLS teams are only allowed to spend so much money on
their roster each year with the exception of three players they call Designated
Players. These players’ contracts will not be counted toward the total cost of
the roster. This is how teams can afford the likes of David Beckham, Zlatan
Ibrahimovic, or a Wayne Rooney.)
We can all expect FC Cincinnati to do better than they
did last year. It’s pretty easy to do better after the extremely disappointing
season they had in 2019. I truly believe this year will be quite the turn
around. I’m not saying we will win any trophies but I am fully expecting this
team will be competing for a playoff spot. Ron Jans had his team competing at
the end of the season last year and with a full offseason I think his system
will be working even better.
If Cincinnati adds three DPs this year and one of those
can score at least 15 goals and another that can add 15 assists this team will
not only be in the playoffs, but could possibly host a playoff game. I am going
to go on record and say that FC Cincinnati will host an MLS cup playoff game in
their final year at Nippert and end Cincinnati’s playoff doldrums and win a
playoff game. I think we would all consider that a smashing success after what
2019 brought us.
No matter what happens I personally cannot wait until
March to see our team take the Pitch.
