THESE are the
times that try a Cincinnatians soul. The fair weather fan will shrink from
service from their club; but those of us that stay with them deserve all the
glory and joy that will come to them. Victory obtained too easily we take for granted: it is through struggle that everything gains value.
It feels as if it is already over. The dream
of a successful professional sports team in Cincinnati has up and vanished like
a thief in the night. All the hopes and dreams of FC Cincinnati breaking our
fair city from the doldrums of failure have been stolen from us in a mere four
months.
Let's be honest, it's so easy for most of us
to fall back into that mind set. We expect it. Nothing ever good happens to us.
Since 1995 we haven't sniffed championship success. For Pete's sake even
Cleveland has a championship in the past five years. We are Charlie Brown and
our professional teams are Lucy continually talking us into having hope.
Nothing comes easy for the Cincinnati Sports fan.
I have been in Nippert to see our club lose. I have seen the frustration of the crowds. I can feel the sense of the inevitable collapse hanging over many. I have also seen that same frustration in the men on the pitch. I see in their eyes that they haven't done enough. They do not walk away from a loss content. They go out and fight again and again for us, the long suffering Cincinnati Sports Fan. If they haven't given up on us than we cannot give up on them or this club.
I still believe in this team. I believe in the
front office. This is still the same group that went from idea at a kitchen
table to MLS in just over two years. That too was a trying time. We watched as
Nashville won a bid with an unproven fan base and a stadium in Fair Grounds. We
witnessed city leadership fight over a stadium being built. We were told to trust the process even though
we had no clue what that process was. Somehow it all happened. I do not believe
that this same group of people went through all of that only to give up now.
Of course we haven't seen the results they
themselves were expecting. I for one would love to see Jeff Berding hold a news
conference and announce two new DP signings and Pep Guardiola as the new head
coach. That ain't gonna happen. I'd be happy to just hear a plan for the
future. Sitting in the dark waiting is not something we do well in the Queen
City. If we don't see results we would like to at least hear the plan to get
some results. One thing that we can expect is for the ownership group and front
office to hold their cards close to their chest. After all, they have done that
since day one, but ever since day one they have delivered.
Now is not the time to give up. As Thomas
Paine said "the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph."
When The MLS Cup does get lifted in our city those of us that stood by this
team will have earned the glory and joy that WILL come to them.
