What a Difference Damet Makes

We all knew that there would be tough times in FC Cincinnati’s inaugural MLS season. New teams must suffer through growing pains as a new group of players learn to play with each other. What we didn’t expect was 5 straight games without a goal. We also didn’t expect to seem so lost out on the pitch. Players looked to be playing hard and putting in to the effort but they were spinning in the mud. There was no vision, and there was no identity.  A lot of this could be forgiven for an expansion team. Perhaps Alan Koch was getting a feel for his players and this league? Maybe he was still learning how to create strategy for this level? What could not be forgiven however, was when he put the blame on these doldrums on the lack of talent on the field.  A coach’s job is to get the best of what he has to work with. As Coach Noman Dale said in Hoosiers “I would hope you would support who we are. Not, who we are not.” Alan Koch’s open pining for better players lost him his job.

Enter Yoann Damet. Given 3 days to practice he had our boys looking like a real team.  There seemed to be a plan, and a vision for this team. Not only did we get goals but there was real build up to the goals. FC Cincinnati broke down Montreal. The ball got moved around. Empty space was created. Players filled that space. We got closer to the goal and we were able to finish.

Montreal is in 3rd place in the Eastern Conference and FC Cincinnati truly looked to be the better team on Saturday.  It cannot be understated how good it is for Greg Garza to be back and playing. His ability to find the right player and start the build-up is of paramount importance for the future of this team. Frankie Amaya is also playing extremely well. The 18 year old’s energy and ball skills are pumping life into this team. I am truly excited for the remainder of the season after what was seen on Saturday.

Now this club must complete the task it started with the firing of Alan Koch. It must remember that Yoann Damet is an Interim Head Coach and not the final stop. Yoann seems to be a great soccer tactician and maybe he will become a great coach but now is not the time to take a flyer on an unknown. Yoann does give the front office some time to make sure they do the right thing. There is no rush to fill the position but it must be filled properly. I also believe there is a spot within this organization for Yoann to stick around and hopefully grow with our team.

It was a long April but there’s reason to believe maybe this month will be better than the last.

Well that was strange.

Going into this season the feeling was that FC Cincinnati was going to play good defense and try to score goals on counter attacks. It worked against Portland and then it worked again against New England. Maybe it worked too well. FC Cincinnati is playing with confidence which is undeniably a good thing, however  it is starting to feel like our confidence is misplaced. We currently don't have a striker that can find the back of the net at will. We do have midfielders and forwards who seem to be moving the ball around well and creating chances but those chances are only making the FCC faithful gasp and not erupt with joy. Friday night was a 90 minute gasp. So many times we appeared to be building well and creating an opportunity only to come away with nothing. For 40 minutes it felt as if that breakthrough was going to happen at any moment. We had the game under control and 3 points felt inevitable. It seemed as if the Real Salt Lake goal was being covered by a Plexiglas Shield...

Here comes our CAM

Word on the street is FC Cincinnati is about pick up the CAM we have all been waiting for. The club is close to signing Gaston Pereiro from PSV Eindhoven. The 24 year old Uruguayan National has total of 60 goals in 195 club appearances in all competitions. He has also netted 4 goals and made 10 appearances playing for the Uruguay National team. With the forthcoming addition of Yuya Kubo and now Gaston Pereiro it appears as if finding the back of the net won't be such an issue for the Orange and Blue. 2020 is looking to be awesome. Pereiro's sweet beard is going to challenge Leo Bertone's for best on the team

Take notice

I get it. This is only FC Cincinnati's second off season. Last season wasn't exactly anything to get excited about. After a great first month of the season we were quickly forgotten. It seems as if the Soccer Media has all but forgotten we exist. We have been swept under the rug... Some poor small market team that will just hoover around relevance. The MLS will happily rake in the money from the vibrant fan base but come on... you can't compete here. FC Cincinnati is on the verge of an amazing signing. Gaston Pereiro is only 24 years old and has had the interest of clubs throughout Europe. He is up and coming. Other than Pity Martinez when has there been such a high profile young player? This isn't the signing of a players who already spent their best years in the Premier League or in La Liga. (I'm looking at you LA Galaxy and Chicharito)This is a player that will instantly make our team not only better but a true competitor. And not just for a year or two. But ...
