Do we celebrate Moral Victories?

Image result for fccincinnati vs lafc public domain imagesFC Cincinnati went out West. They took on arguably the best team in MLS at this point in the season. They played in front of a pretty raucous fan base. LAFC were coming home from a two-game road trip where they won by a combined score of 9-0. FC Cincinnati had no chance and were about to be blown out. My only hope was that we wouldn’t get embarrassed.

We didn’t get embarrassed. Losing 2-0 to a great team on the road is nothing to be ashamed of. The second goal came at the end of the game when Cincinnati was pressing, trying to get a late game equalizer. Yes, we were still in the game and had multiple chances to tie the game. It was a great game. Yes, it was obvious that LAFC was the more talented team, but it was equally as obvious that FCC didn’t care. They worked hard. They never gave up. They hustled. Those things will get you far in this city. Tim Krumrie, Ryan Freel and of course, Charlie Hustle himself – Pete Rose. Those players have a special place in our heart, not because of their talent, but because of their work ethic and toughness.

No one will be happy if we have a hard-working team that loses all the time. We need results and it was disappointing to not get a result on Saturday. We had our chances. Darren Mattocks, who is now our primary striker with Fanendo Adi out for who knows how long, was fantastic. He was all over the field and creating chances for not only himself, but also his entire team.  He was close multiple times but was never able to finish. If we can’t get the goals then the chances won’t matter. As happy as I was with our effort, I was equally disappointed with the finishing.

Although I don’t believe in “moral victories” in sports, I do think this game can be looked at as some sort of a success. We belong in MLS. We aren’t going to be pushovers and most importantly we aren’t just like Minnesota. We are FC Cincinnati and we are here to stay.

Now for a rant about the television coverage – I don’t know who is in charge of the broadcast we see. I’ve heard it’s the same video broadcast for wherever you watch the game. Only the commentator audio is different. But whoever was the director for that broadcast needs to NEVER work another soccer game again. Replays would be happening and showing the same play multiple times and when we would go back to live action, possession would have changed and an attack was building. Same thing would happen with close ups of either a coach on the sideline or of Carlos Vella brushing his emo hair out of his brooding eyes. It was horrific. As much as I love watching the Orange and Blue I don’t know how many more games I can watch with such horrible camera action.

FC Cincinnati is back home next week to take on Real Salt Lake on Friday night. Here’s hoping we can find the net and the camera crews can follow the action on the field.

Well that was strange.

Going into this season the feeling was that FC Cincinnati was going to play good defense and try to score goals on counter attacks. It worked against Portland and then it worked again against New England. Maybe it worked too well. FC Cincinnati is playing with confidence which is undeniably a good thing, however  it is starting to feel like our confidence is misplaced. We currently don't have a striker that can find the back of the net at will. We do have midfielders and forwards who seem to be moving the ball around well and creating chances but those chances are only making the FCC faithful gasp and not erupt with joy. Friday night was a 90 minute gasp. So many times we appeared to be building well and creating an opportunity only to come away with nothing. For 40 minutes it felt as if that breakthrough was going to happen at any moment. We had the game under control and 3 points felt inevitable. It seemed as if the Real Salt Lake goal was being covered by a Plexiglas Shield...

Here comes our CAM

Word on the street is FC Cincinnati is about pick up the CAM we have all been waiting for. The club is close to signing Gaston Pereiro from PSV Eindhoven. The 24 year old Uruguayan National has total of 60 goals in 195 club appearances in all competitions. He has also netted 4 goals and made 10 appearances playing for the Uruguay National team. With the forthcoming addition of Yuya Kubo and now Gaston Pereiro it appears as if finding the back of the net won't be such an issue for the Orange and Blue. 2020 is looking to be awesome. Pereiro's sweet beard is going to challenge Leo Bertone's for best on the team

Take notice

I get it. This is only FC Cincinnati's second off season. Last season wasn't exactly anything to get excited about. After a great first month of the season we were quickly forgotten. It seems as if the Soccer Media has all but forgotten we exist. We have been swept under the rug... Some poor small market team that will just hoover around relevance. The MLS will happily rake in the money from the vibrant fan base but come on... you can't compete here. FC Cincinnati is on the verge of an amazing signing. Gaston Pereiro is only 24 years old and has had the interest of clubs throughout Europe. He is up and coming. Other than Pity Martinez when has there been such a high profile young player? This isn't the signing of a players who already spent their best years in the Premier League or in La Liga. (I'm looking at you LA Galaxy and Chicharito)This is a player that will instantly make our team not only better but a true competitor. And not just for a year or two. But ...
